I suppose the title of this compilation is a disarmingly blunt way conveying the motivation for a lot of the songs it contains. And living was surely hard for these musicians, although they at least didn’t face the ever-present threat of lynching that their counterparts in the American South faced. The lack of English on this album makes it harder to convey this hardship, but at least we have the title to remind us.

This is eerie music, and for most people will probably take a while to get used to. But the effort it requires to appreciate these complex rhythms and strange melodies is well worth it.

New Orleans Funk: The Original Sound of Funk 1960-75

This Soul Jazz staple is probably the most fun compilation in history. That is possibly hyperbolic, but I’m listening to it as I type this and that is just how it seems to me right now

Love in the Fascist Brothel (2005)

I REMEMBER WHEN THIS MEANT SO MUCH TO ME. I MISSED SEEING THEM LIVE AND APPARENTLY THE SINGER WENT AROUND TONGUE KISSING BROS In the way of designer sloppy but secretly completely able noise rawk slash hardcore with homoerotic tendencies and responses to masculinity (of the state and/or individual), Love in the Fascist Brothel still does its job crazy well

Robert Hood - Nighttime World Volume 1 (1995)

I think we’re listening to different things. My nighttime world is orange. It sounds orange. I took a week off work to fly to Wellington for three days and see Lil B. Before flying, this was my jam. This and Burnout Paradise. Let the genius of this and the retardation of that hypnotize you into a warm, low-key, hypno-elation. ‘Cause it’s all fun and it’s all orange.

Lady Bee - Strictly For That Nigga (1994)

Real freakish helium memphis shit. Could be Kingpin Skinny Pimp or a woman he wronged or Kingpin Skinny Pimp playing a woman he wronged. Creative ominous lo-fi as expected from the time&place of its creation, and by its excavation via the cult of time&place revisionists

That’s my man, that’s my man, that’s my man, that’s my man

Jealous ho

That’s my man

Jealous ho, jealous ho, jealous ho, jealous ho

That’s my man

Because hearing helium voice freaks doing that is like haha okay wow. Even if Lady Bee is actually Kingpin Skinny Pimp it’s like okay that’s crazy. And if it’s not then it might be even weirder because that pitch is all over the place etc
